Sketching the World One Drawing at a Time

Sketching the World One Drawing at a Time (illustrations by Betsy Beier/Wanderlust Designer)
I've been a busy bee this last month over on my other site, Wanderlust Designer. I'm so excited to have many of my travel sketches and designs I've been working on posted in one central location.

This past year, besides designs and drawings of various locations I've traveled, I've been working on two different sketch series; "Eat Drink Travel" sketch series and "Scenes from..." sketch series. Many of these illustrations have stories associated to them as well, like a story about drinking Turkish coffee in Istanbul and enjoying a churrasco BBQ feast in Rio de Janeiro.

Head on over to my travel sketches and take a peak, I'd love to hear your feedback.

Brainstorm Session: Following My Artsy Passion

Diagram of an Artist's Brain - Illustration by B.Nute productions
My brain has been on artsy overdrive lately. This summer, when I took a little time off,  I rediscovered my artsy self. Ever since I've been full of ideas and can't stop drawing. I've been focusing mainly on my travel sketches, but every now and again add some other whimsical drawings in the mix. I've joined up with several different sketch-a-day (#sketchaday) efforts on Instagram, including a 30 day sketch challenge in September and an #inktober drawing challenge this October. I've even been taking a fabulous online storytelling sketch class from Sketchbook Skool.

I must say, I've definitely been feeling a little scattered, though. My desires to continue to produce art has left my blogging in the dust. I did a little brainstorming this week and came up with a plan to help this nagging problem. I've decided to follow my passions, and do what I'm enjoying at the moment-- illustrations and design.

What does this mean-- Well, you'll be seeing a lot more of my illustrations and drawings here on this blog. As with any thing, I'd love to hear your feedback. Leave a comment below, or send an email anytime!

Outdoor Adventure Essentials

The Essentials: Outdoor Adventure Poster and Notecard by B.Nute productions
There's nothing like an outdoor adventure! Tying up those hiking boots, filling up your canteen and headed out into the wilderness can be so exhilarating. My son and husband had a handful of camping adventures this summer. Sadly, I didn't make it out on one of them. Now that it's fall, though, and the weather is a bit cooler, I'm craving a little outdoor time!

Drawing these essentials to an outdoor adventure has definitely inspired me. Perhaps if a full blown camping trip doesn't happen for me this fall, I should just head out into the backyard and camp under the stars.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, and/or love to camp, head over to my shop and pick up one of my Outdoor Adventure posters or some notecards with these camping inspired drawings. I'm may just inspire you to head out and hit the trail as well.

Gettin' Crafty: Free Printable Creativity Quote 8x10 Sign

Free Printable "Creativity Makes Life More Fun" 8x10 Sign from B.Nute productions
"Creativity makes life more fun." It's as simple as that!

I've really been trying to step up my creative game lately-- doing more sketching, more drawing, more watercoloring, more creative projects - I've even picked up my dusty guitar to strum a few chords. I truly believe creativity makes my life more fun.

To get you inspired, I've created a free printable quote. I had fun playing with type on top of one of the color abstracts I painted. After I printed it out, I put it in a simple 8x10 frame and put it on my desk. It's bright, cheery and the perfect reminder to greet me in the morning when I begin work. I hope you find it inspiring as well.

Dinosaur Party Invitations and More Filled with Prehistoric Fun

Prehistoric Fun Including B.Nute productions Dinosaur Party Invitations
I remember when my nephew was a dino-fanatic! He knew every dinosaur name, the time period in which they roamed the earth, their eating habits and much, much more. It's hard to believe he is now a senior in high school!

Many kids go through a phase of loving dinosaurs. To capitalize on their inner-Paleontologist, why not throw them a dinosaur party! I had fun creating these rustic invitations and matching party goods. I challenged myself by hand drawing the dinosaurs, and then giving them a grungy, dino-texture. Below is a sample of the invitation and matching party accessories available for your party.

Bein' Real: Closet Envy

A Well Organized Closet
I have a case of closet envy, and I have it bad! On the last leg of our Japan trip we were spoiled and stayed in the famed Peninsula Hotel, Tokyo. Wow! When we were escorted to our room, I let out a few oo's and ahh's, but once the bellman had departed, I really started to drool! Ample space, wide halls, multiple rooms, great views, amenities at every turn. I was in heaven.

Then I walked into the closet. That's when envy set in!

Yes, there were no clothes in the closet, so of course it looked huge... but it wasn't just that. There was a place for everything and plenty of room too. There was even a sweet little dressing table with a mirror. (My 40+ year old eyesight now understands the beauty of these magnifying mirrors!)

I instantly thought of my closet at home. It's actually a pretty decent size. It's not Kardashian sized where you could fit a full boutique, but it's not tiny either. I've always loved it's late 1940's charm. It has 3 built in cubbies, and even sweet dressing table too. So why complain?

Well, unfortunately, in my almost 10 years living in our wonderful home, I have never had a cleared off spot to actually sit at that dressing table and put on make up, let alone consistently find an outfit I am happy with and/or pick up that scarf or accessorizing purse to match. My closet is stuffed. Overrun with a bunch of so-so clothes. It's time for a serious operation-- time to extract the bad, get rid of the "just in-case" items and find those cute outfits lurking in the mix.

I've been reading up on capsule wardrobes and am very inspired. Have you read about it? The simple description is a paired down closet per season or few months time period. Some folks pair their wardrobe down to 10 items. Some swear by a magical number like 33 items. Some are strict and allow no freebies (like accessories count in your item total), some are a bit more lenient. Either way, the theory is the less clothes you have in your closet, the more likely you will be able to find them and wear them. Also, if you take the time to think about your clothes as a mix and match set (per season), you will always look good.

Well, I'm sold. I've watched enough of the now off-the-air TV show "What Not to Wear" to know it's time! Wish me luck. I'll report back soon.

Our big trip this past summer was to Japan. What a wonderful country filled with rich history, beautiful scenery and, of course, incredible design. Back to School, Back to Work, Back to Reality!

It's Back to School Time (illustration by B.Nute productions)
I'm back! What a summer it's been. There was lounging by the pool and kayaking on the lake. There was time to sketch and time to workout. There was also an incredible adventure to a far off country.

Taking the last 2 months off has been wonderful, but now I'm ready to dive back in to my business and start designing. I've been invigorated by getting back to my artistic roots of sketching and painting and plan to add much of it to my work. I've also been inspired by our recent trip to Japan. There were so many wonderful visual delights I'm eager to capture. I can't wait to incorporate this new energy into my work as well.

So, now that the kids are happily back at school, I'm ready to get creating. This Fall, I plan to post on Tuesdays and Thursdays -- I'll be sharing all these new ideas and also plan to continue with fun free printables to liven up your every day. Here's to a wonderful Fall season.

July Break

July has arrived and life is good! We are spending time swimming, playing tennis, golfing, and of course making time to sketch. The craziness of the school year has taught me that slowing down a little during the summer is ok. In fact, I've decided it's just plain necessary.

Late August will be here in a blink of an eye, and my kids will go racing back to school, homework, sports and more, so while they are around this summer, I've decided to take a little blogging break and enjoy the long days and warm nights to just hang out.

I plan to pop in here and there, as well as give a peak in at our exciting vacation up ahead... But for the most part, you'll find me lazing by the pool! Feel free to email with any questions or thoughts, and I promise to dry off long enough to answer.

Hope you are enjoying the summer as much as I am!

Free Printable Reading /Video Game Log

Free Printable Reading/Video Game Log by B.Nute productions
Summer break is here, and although my kids will be very active with swim team, tennis lessons, golf, traveling and more, I know we will still have lots of downtime.... downtime that if my son had his way would be spent playing video games.

I'm definitely not one to prohibit a little gaming. My kids like it and even my husband loves to join in on the weekends. Like everything, though, it needs to be in moderation. So, this summer we are starting something new. I've created a Reading/Gaming Log page to actively track their gaming time and their reading time. The initial plan is, for every minute they read, they will get a minute of game time. My daughter is a big reader, but my son on the other hand will read only every so often. He also thinks that 20 minutes of reading is a good amount... but when it comes to his iPad games, he can be engaged for 120 minutes and not blink an eye. I think this log will give the kids a chance to see how much time they do spend on these activities, and possibly modify it in the future and/or choose alternatives to gaming like possibly running around outside!

We'll see how it goes. I'll definitely report back mid-summer and let you know!

Free Printable Teacher Appreciation Tags

Free Printable "Vocab" Teacher Appreciation Tags by B.Nute productions
There's no denying it... my kids have really had some wonderful teachers through the years! We are so lucky. With the end of the school year approaching, it's time to find a little something to show how much I really appreciate all that they do, day in and day!
Free Printable "Vocab" Teacher Appreciation Tags by B.Nute productions
In light of the many vocabulary and spelling tests I've helped my kids prepare for, I thought it would be fun to make some free printable tags that best define how wonderful our teachers are. The tag is designed using a weathered piece of binder paper, and a dictionary style. I strung it with some twine-- I thought it looked great with the distressed feel.

So, print out a bunch of these, and tie them to a bouquet of flowers, a gift card, or any other gift you may be giving and let your child's teach know just how much they are appreciated!

Kentucky Derby Essentials

The Essentials: Kentucky Derby - Drawing by B.Nute productions

"And they're off…"

They say it's the fastest 2 minutes in sports. I say it looks like a great party! The Kentucky Derby is coming up this weekend. I've never been, but it's definitely on my bucket list. I love the tradition surrounding the event- the chilled mint juleps in silver mugs, the festive hat decked out with flowers and floating butterflies if you'd like, and the red roses… lots and lots of beautiful blooming red roses.

Of course, there is actually a horse race involved too. A horse race seeped in history filled with skilled jockeys and well bred horses. Don't forget about a little luck. Sometimes it's the underdog who surprises the crowd!

I had a great time creating my "The Essentials: Kentucky Derby" drawing above. It includes all the necessary items for a wonderful Kentucky Derby-- from the mint julep, to the prize trophy. It's a great snapshot of a wonderful tradition that fleets by every year!

Holiday Traditions: The Easter Dress

Holiday Traditions: The Easter Dress by B.Nute productions
I can still remember my daughter's sweet little yellow Easter dress she wore one year when she was a toddler. The bright yellow pressed cotton, the smocking with tiny adorable embroidered flowers on it, and the precious peter pan collar. She looked perfect for a bright Easter morning brunch!

Each year, my mom continued the tradition she started when my daughter was born by getting her an Easter dress to wear. It's always been the same, sweet traditional style I just love, until more recently. Although I couldn't be more proud to watch my daughter grow into a young woman, it's hard to say goodbye to those sweet dresses!

I did tuck a few into a box to save for her when she's a mom. With such a timeless style, perhaps her daughter or daughters could wear one as well. I can only hope she'll keep up the Easter dress tradition. With such a casual lifestyle we lead, it's always fun to get dressed up once and awhile!

Once home, my obsession continued. I decided to create a project that would celebrate my very own front door. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It's the perfect collage to be framed and sit near

Poisson d'Avril: April Fool's Day Tradition in France

Poisson d'Avril - France's April Fool's Day Tradition
I love learning about different traditions celebrated in other countries. When I first heard how the French celebrate April Fool's Day I was quite confused. The day is called Poisson d'Avril and the tradition is to tape a paper fish drawing on to your friend's back without them knowing. It has the same light hearted silliness as a prank one might play on April Fool's Day in the United States, but the prank never changes. It's always a fish. So, why the name "April fish" and how did the tradition come to be?
